Chiropractic

As one of the largest primary care professions in Ontario, chiropractic is an evidence-based, non-invasive, hands-on health care discipline that focuses on the musculoskeletal system. Chiropractors practice primarily using their hands, providing diagnosis, treatment and preventive care for disorders related to the spine, pelvis, nervous system and joints. Almost 2.7 million patients in Ontario rely on chiropractic care every year to help them live healthy, active lives.

Chiropractors use a combination of treatments, depending on the specific needs of the individual patient. After taking a history, performing an examination and establishing a diagnosis, a chiropractor can develop and carry out a comprehensive treatment plan, recommending therapeutic exercise, performing manual therapies, and providing dietary and lifestyle counselling.

Treatment plans depend on the individual, their injuries or conditions, and their goals. Every visit will have an emphasis on educating the patient about what tissues and movements are dysfunctional, and what exercises or other treatments can help heal and correct these issues. There are a number of treatment options available and the ones chosen will depend on the condition, the patient’s comfort and preference, and the doctor’s clinical opinion.

Treatments may include

Joint manipulation and mobilizations to restricted and sometimes painful joints including the feet, ankles, knees, hips, pelvis, spine, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and jaw. Chiropractors at Trent Health in Motion practice diversified chiropractic technique which provides in a number of ways to suit a patient’s needs and comfort.

Acupuncture decreases pain by stimulating nerves and increases the release of the body’s pain relieving chemicals by the insertion of fine, sterile needles into the skin. Acupuncture is also believed to cause local tissue changes to stimulate healing, and can be used to deactivate trigger points in the muscles.

The key to improving movement, posture, wellness and performance is gaining an understanding of why each patient is having their issue. Educating each patient on what is involved with their condition, why this is happening, and limit recurrence is the most important aspect of a thorough, effective treatment plan.

The best evidence suggests that Chiropractic care in combination with therapeutic exercises yields better patient outcomes. A Chiropractor will provide each patient a personalized therapeutic exercise program geared to their individual goals.

Chiropractors use hands-on or instrument assisted muscle release techniques to relax tight sore muscles and fascia, and improve local blood flow to an injured area.
