A Registered Dietitian is a regulated health professional, who is a credible source for nutrition information. Dietitians undergo extensive education and training. To use the title Registered Dietitian (RD), an individual must complete a four-year Bachelor of Science degree, as well as a Dietitian’s of Canada accredited practicum, which includes at least 1250 hours of training. They must also pass the Canadian Dietetic Registration exam to be registered with their provincial dietetic regulatory body.

Dietitians are trained to provide evidence-based nutrition counselling and education to clients. A dietitian will assess your current dietary intake, physical activity level, medical history, laboratory data (if available) and social history. In addition, the Dietitian will discuss with you your personal health goals and readiness to change. This allows the Dietitian to work with you to determine the best individualized plan for you. A Dietitian can help facilitate healthy behaviour change, by providing strategies and resources to improve your diet based on your needs.
